5 Healthy Smoothies You Can't Resist This Summer

Jul 13th 2016

Admit it: a fresh fruit smoothie tastes and feels better than ice cream on a hot summer’s day

Summer is in full force and we’re ready to get healthy. This time of year, the sun stays out longer and the days are warmer, making lighter eating easier — and it feels more satisfying to indulge in refreshing, healthier treats this time of year. Anything too heavy can leave us feeling a bit too full.

One of our favorite summer treats is a fresh, nutrient-packed smoothie. They’re light, filling (in all the right ways), and they taste great! Plus, smoothies are packed full of essential vitamins and antioxidants needed to stay healthy. Here are a few of our favorite options that keep us going strong all summer long:

1. Strawberry banana & spinach

Everyone knows and loves the most classic smoothie combination: strawberry + banana. But we like to kick it up a notch and add an extra punch of power in the health department. Say hello to extra vitamin A, vitamin K, folic acid, iron, and fiber. Surprisingly enough, veggies can be a great, mild addition to any smoothie — and we can barely even taste them. Not so sure about spinach? Try kale, carrots, or cucumbers next time around.

2. PB & J

There’s something about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that brings us straight back to our childhood. It’s soothing, comforting, and the perfect blend of savory meets sweet. And this recipe from Real Simple is just the right mix to give us that PB & J flavor we crave with the added bonus of extra whole fruits, more protein, and fewer processed sugars, all while avoiding nutritionally-devoid white bread.

3. Creamy watermelon

Thanks to the watery, sweet consistency of watermelon, it’s just a couple steps away from a smoothie in itself. Just add 2 cups of watermelon, ¼ cup of milk and 2 cups of ice, and blend until smooth. Add more ice if a colder or thicker consistency is desired.

4. Green tea fruit smoothie

Who doesn’t love a fresh fruit smoothie? And with the added green tea, this light choice is an antioxidant rich selection to sip all summer. It’s simple: blend a cup of frozen fruit, like peach and pineapple, a cup of cold green tea, 1-2 tablespoons of honey, and the juice from half a lemon.

We love that it’s a natural energy-booster without the fear of getting the jitters — sure, it’s got caffeine in it, but it’s not over the top.

5. Smoothie bowl

One of the newest trends in the world of smoothies is the smoothie bowl. Filled with nutritious and filling treats, this is a power-packed way to start the day.

The recipe is easy: we just start with our favorite fruit and veggie smoothie and top it with healthy ingredients, like pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, almonds, fresh fruit slices, and more. Not only is this option full of fiber and vitamins, but we also can’t get enough of the added benefits of the other ingredients, like the unique selection of seeds you can include.

Getting healthy is easier than ever with a few quick changes.
